Carrollton, GA – Sophomore guard Joe Boyer (Douglasville-New Manchester) scored a game-high 19 points to lead West Georgia Tech to a 72-46 victory over Oxford College of Emory in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) Division III opener for both teams.
The Golden Knights dominated inside, outscoring the visiting Eagles 30-10 in the paint. After a relatively slow start by both teams, a lay-up by San Rozier (Conyers-Heritage) gave the Golden Knights a 13-10 lead at the 10:02 mark of the opening half triggering a 20-4 run to stretch the lead to 31-14 with 1:37 left. WGTC put the game away early in the 2nd with a 16-1 run over the first 2:23 to take a commanding 47-19 lead.
With the win, Coach Niki Okolovitch's club improves to 7-9 overall, but more importantly 1-0 in GCAA play. Oxford-Emory, winners of 5 straight coming into tonight's game, drop to 8-10 and 0-1.
The Knights travel to Griffin and a key match-up with Southern Crescent Saturday at 5:00. A WGTC win will put them in control as they attempt to defend their GCAA Championship. The Knights will return home against LaGrange College's JV Sunday morning in a game earlier postponed because of weather. Tip is set for 11:30 am.
