Boyer Named Player of the Year

Oxford, GA - Just three days after edging Southern Crescent 62-61 to clinch a share of the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) regular season championship, the Golden Knights had to take on the same opponent in the GCAA Tournament Championship hosted by Oxford-Emory.  This time, the Tigers pulled away for the win 65-53 here Sunday.  Southern Crescent took a 25-20 lead after a somewhat sluggish half and heated up in the 2nd to get the win.  They now advance to the NJCAA District G Tournament to be held this weekend.

As has been the case for much of the season, the Knights were led by Joe Boyer, who poured in 18 points.  Antonio Smith and Rodney Thomas also scored in double figures, with 15 and 11 points respectively.  Coach Niki Okolovitch's team closed the season 9-13 overall, 3-1 in GCAA play.

Despite the loss, there was some good news for the Knights. Boyer was named the GCAA Division III Player of the Year for the second consecutive season.  The sophomore, who prepped at nearby New Manchester High School in Douglasville, led the Knights with 17.3 points per game.   Joining Boyer on the 1st team was Smith.  Smith, a sophomore out of Covington and Newton County High, averaged a double-double with 12.4 points and 10.1 rebounds per game.

Another sophomore, San Marteen Rozier, was recognized as a 2nd team selection as well as being named to the All-Defensive Team.  A Conyers native, Rozier came to WGTC via Heritage High School.  He averaged just under 10 points and 5 assists per game.  Also recognized on the All-Defensive team was freshman Christian Haye.  The Brooklyn, NY native played at Redan High and proved to be a solid defender in primarily a reserve role.
