Oxford, GA – Two free-throws by Tyler Glover with 3.5 seconds to play lifted the Knights to a thrilling 81-79 win over Emory-Oxford here Saturday evening. The Eagles (15-6, 0-1) had just tied the game at 79 with under 10 seconds before the foul sent Glover to the line. The freshman from Newton High in Covington calmly stepped to the line and hit his only 2 free throws of the game and the Knights stole a long pass down the floor to secure the victory.
Another freshman out of Covington, Juwan Johnson (Newton High), led WGTC with 19 points while Bevon Wray (Atlanta – Union Grove High) contributed a double-double with a game-high 14 rebounds to go along with 12 points. Oxford's JJ Halaby led all scorers with 29 points.
With the win, the Knights improved to 9-8 overall, but more importantly 1-0 in Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA.) As the only two teams playing GCAA Division III basketball this season, the winner of the season series will claim the conference championship. The two clubs will square-off again on February 6 in Carrollton at 7:30 pm. A WGTC win will give the Knights the conference championship and a berth in the NJCAA District Tournament. The Knights will travel to Oxford for Game 3 of the series on February 23.
Coach Niki Okolovitch's club has 2 games on the schedule prior to the showdown with the Eagles. This upcoming Wednesday, the LaGrange College junior varsity squad will travel to Carrollton for a 7 pm contest at Oak Mountain Academy. On Saturday, the Knights travel to Cuthbert for a meeting with Andrew College. Tip is set for 3 pm.
