Carrollton, GA-- Behind 24 points from Anna Watkins, the West Georgia Technical College Golden Knights downed the Lady Bison of Southern Union Monday night 61-50. The win improves the Golden Knights to 6-15 with two games remaining in the regular season.
Both teams came out of the gate quickly, with Southern Union leading by as many as 9 points in the opening period, before WGTC cut the lead to 21-17 at the close of the first. The 2nd period was back and forth, but a layup by Faith Swint with 8 seconds to play gave the Golden Knighs a 34-32 leasd at the break.
The 3rd period proved to be the turning point as the Golden Knights exploded with an 18-5 run over the first 9:00 to take a 54-37 lead into the 4th. The Lady Bison, who fell to 7-13 on the season, battled back, cutting the lead to 54-46 with 4:54 remaining, but a Watkins 3-pointer ended the run and the Golden Knights cruised to the victory.
Coach Alford Williams' bench performed well as Jordan Davis added 14 points. Overall, the WGTC's bench outscored Southern Union 19-2. Another key in the win was the Golden Knights converted 35 Lady Bison turnovers to 30 points.
Andrew College travels to Carrollton Wednesday night as WGTC celebrates Sophomore Night. Tip at Oak Mountain Academy is scheduled for 7:00pm.
