Basketball Sweeps Southern Crescent on Sophomore "Knight"

Carrollton, GA – Both the women's and men's basketball teams celebrated Sophomore Night in grand fashion by earning key Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) wins here Monday night.  The women held on to win 52-50 while the men fought off a late rally by the Tigers to win 62-61.

The women's game was a tight contest throughout, with neither team able to lead by more than 6 points. Two free throws by Kia Jefferson gave the Knights a 46-44 lead with 5:21 to play.  A basket by Phyllisse Lewis with 3:47 extended the lead to 48-44 and the Knights held on the rest of the way.

Jefferson and Lewis led the way for WGTC with 13 points each. Alexis Henderson added 12 and Eriyana Mitchell recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.  Victoria Kennedy pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds.

WGTC (7-13, 2-0) will face Southern Crescent again in the Region XVII Championship game this Sunday at 2:00 hosted by Oxford-Emory. The winner will advance to the NJCAA Regional Finals later this month.

The men's game was a game of runs.  Early on, it was Southern Crescent who was in control.  A 3-pointer by Eldrick Harrison put the Tigers up 28-14 with 6:18 to play in the opening half. For the remainder of the half, the Knights clawed their way back.  A 3-pointer by Malik Amos with 8 seconds to play pulled the Knights within 1 at 32-31 at the break.

That momentum continued early in the second half.  Following a 3-pointer by Rodney Thomas, WGTC led 47-37 with 13:35 to play. It was then Southern Crescent's time to battle back and they did. A basket by Carlos Winters put the visitors up 52-51 with 5:46 remaining.  The lead changed hands no fewer than 6 times over the last 5:46. San Marteen Rozier hit 2 free throws at the 3:29 mark gave the Knights a 57-56 lead. An Antonio Smith lay-up and then 2 free throws from Joe Boyer pushed the lead to 61-56 with 42 seconds remaining.  The Tigers hit a 3 pointer at the buzzer as the Knights held on.

With the win the Knights (9-12, 3-1) avenged a 75-70 loss against Southern Crescent (12-11, 3-1) earlier this season, but more importantly moved them into a tie with the Tigers in GCAA play.  WGTC won the coin toss and will be the #1 seed in this weekend's Region XVII Tournament, earning a bye in the opening game Saturday. The Knights will play the winner between Southern Crescent and Oxford-Emory Sunday at 4:00.  The tournament is being hosted by Oxford-Emory.
